14 Laid-Off NUSD Teachers Rehired

More than a dozen Natomas Unified School District teachers will be back on the job – permanently – starting today.

Fourteen of the teachers who received pink slips in the spring, and who have been working for the district as temporary substitutes since school started August 16, were officially rehired on Friday.

Earlier this year, 59 teachers received prelimary layoff notices and 47 of those were laid off. Two teachers were rehired before school started and about 17 more brought back on as long-term substitutes while the district conducted “warm body counts” to determine how many students returned to Natomas schools for the 2011-12 year.

Previous media reports that all laid-off teachers had been rehired over the summer were incorrect. To date, only 16 out of the 47 now have teaching jobs in the district.

The Natomas Unified School District applied for and received a state waiver which allows for larger class sizes. But the district’s contract with the teachers’ union limits classes to as many as 32 students in elementary classes and 38 students in high school classes without the district having to pay teachers for “overages.”

Sources tell THE NATOMAS BUZZ the recently rehired teachers were given the choice of classes based on seniority and some of those who had been substituting will be switching classrooms effective today. Students are also likely be moved this week too as grade levels and class sizes are made as even as possible throughout the district.
