Break-ins of at least two cluster mailboxes were reported Thursday morning in Natomas.

An increase in vandalism and theft of mail from the boxes has been reported to The Natomas Buzz and shared on social media networks such as Facebook groups and Nextdoor on an increasing basis in recent weeks.

The break-ins have been not been limited to the Natomas area with the Pocket and Greenhaven neighborhoods also reporting a rise in cluster mailbox vandalism.

Since April, break-ins in Natomas include cluster mailboxes located at, but not limited to:

  • East Commerce and Natomas Crossing
  • Nantucket Way and Bissett Way
  • Mabry Drive and Dunlay Drive
  • Lackland Way and Mabry Drive
  • Boswell Way
  • Chateau Montelena Way
  • Natomas Park Apartments
  • Banfield Drive and Mabry Drive
  • Dunlay Drive and Brampton Way

Capt. Steve Oliveira said Natomas residents whose mailboxes are broken into can file online report with the Sacramento Police Department. They can also report it to the U.S. Postal Inspector.

“We will investigate to see if there are surveillance cameras in the area or any leads to work towards,” said Oliveira, who oversees the north area. “Prevention techniques involve putting good lighting around the mail box, installing cameras pointed at the mailbox, not leaving your mail in the box overnight, and using a P.O. Box to retrieve mail.”

Mail that cannot be delivered due to vandalized mailboxes will be held at the Sacramento Main Post Office located at 2000 Royal Oaks Drive in Sacramento.
