A 51-year-old man was hit and killed early today on Interstate 80.

At about 5 a.m. Thursday, July 18 the California Highway Patrol received a report of a pedestrian in the roadway.

“While units were on route, we received a report of a party down in the roadway,” CHP spokesperson Lizz Dutton said.

The driver of a Kia sedan was traveling eastbound on I-80 in the #3 lane when a pedestrian, described as a white male wearing dark clothing, ran out into the roadway in front of him just east of Truxel Road, Dutton said. The pedestrian was then struck by a Dodge Ram 1500.

Both vehicles stopped and officers have interviewed a third driver, who may also have hit the pedestrian, and who contacted the CHP shortly after the accident, Dutton said. Eastbound traffic was delayed until the scene was cleared at about 7:10 a.m.

Dutton said there were no other vehicles near the scene and that the victim may have been a transient.

Nearly three months ago, in April 2013, a 66-year-old male pedestrian fell from the Northgate Boulevard overcrossing into the #3 of westbound I-80. The West Sacramento man had parked his vehicle on the overcrossing and was standing over the westbound traffic lanes before falling and being hit by several vehicles.
