A massive power outage impacted more than 24,000 homes and businesses in Natomas for nearly an hour today.

The outage occurred at about 1:58 p.m. and power was partially restored to some Natomas customers about 30 minutes later.

At press time, thousands of homes and businesses in south and north Natomas remained without power according to SMUD but reports were trickling in to THE NATOMAS BUZZ that electricity had returned to River View/Witter Ranch, Regency Park, Natomas Park, Natomas Crossing, Westlake and the River Oaks area.

SMUD cited a “major equipment” failure for the power outage, but added the exact cause was “still under investigation.” SMUD cited damage to power equipment located at Northgate Road and Del Paso Road from Mylar balloons caused the power outage.

SMUD estimated power would be restored to all affected customers by 4:30 5:30 p.m. SMUD reported all power restored to Natomas customers at 3:43 p.m.

The outage that stretched from south of Interstate 80 north to the Sacramento International Airport – temporarily shutting down some local businesses including the Regal Natomas Marketplace movie theater and McDonald’s.

Residents reported stoplights on Truxel Road from Interstate 80 to Club Center Drive were out.

Parts of the neighboring Robla area were also affected by the outage.

In an email message to area residents, the Sacramento Police Department’s north area command warned of the impacts a power outage could have on homes.

“Be advised if you are not home and unaware of the potential impact,” read the message.
