Challenger Angelique Ashby’s lead over incumbent Ray Tretheway widened today as Sacramento County elections officials released updated counts from Tuesday’s primary election for the District One seat on the Sacramento City Council.
To date, Ashby has claimed 51 percent of the vote to Tretheway’s 41 percent. Third candidate Efren Guttierrez has 7 percent of the vote.
More than 47,000 vote-by-mail ballots remain to be counted. According to elections officials, the count likely will not be complete until next Friday.
Despite the 1,000-plus vote lead, Ashby has yet to claim victory in the closely-watched race. Asbhy must have 50 percent of the total votes cast, plus one, to avoid a runoff vote in November.
“This is a great upward trend for our campaign,” she said. “As the final ballots are counted I am looking forward to putting the election behind us and getting to work for District One.”
