Nearly two dozen Natomas Charter School high schoolers recently repainted the “Authors of Our Own Destiny” sculpture.

Advanced visual arts students in 9th-12th grades on Friday spent several hours painting literary images on the interactive community sculpture. Teacher Carrie Markel said all the images painted on the front and back of the sculpture are from books.

The words painted across the top of the sculpture are Elfin, said Markel, and mean “There’s no friend like a book.”

An exhibit of book covers drawn and painted by Natomas Charter students is currently on exhibit in the North Natomas Library lobby. Both projects combine language arts curriculum students are learning with visual arts, Markel said.
