Three Natomas High School students participated in the Chevron Design Challenge regional competition earlier this month – and won.

On Saturday, April 13 Natomas High juniors Aidan Freeman-Butalla, 16, Jantell Wells, 16, and Shimran Devi, 17, competed against 14 California high schools at Granite Bay High School. The students each won an iPad 2s as well as an all-expense paid trip to San Diego to compete in the state finals on May 11.

The students’ task was to redesign a gas station bathroom to make it cleaner, kid friendly, and handicap accessible. Students were not allowed to modify the toilets in any way did not have to redesign the entire restroom.

“I was shocked and immensely happy that we won,” said Freeman-Butalla. “It made me proud to be part of such a great team.”

Chevron sponsors the event in order to provide Engineering Design Students with the opportunity to showcase their talents, in a variety of engineering fields, before a panel of engineering judges.
