ELK GROVE – The Inderkum High School girls basketball team lost to Florin 54-29 Thursday afternoon during the first game of the Elk Grove-Bill Cartwright Classic women’s tournament.

Senior shooting guard Sakara Brewer led the Tigers with 16 points, including seven of the 13 points scored by the team scored in the first half.

Florin High School got off to an early 26-13 first half lead over Inderkum.

Inderkum assistant head coach Tim Shakesnider said playing teams like Florin – with seven players from last year’s playoff team, including three top scorers – will help the young Tiger squad as it heads into league play in January. (The Inderkum varsity girls team has just three seniors, six juniors, one sophomore and one freshman.)

“It is (about) stepping out of our league and into the playoffs is what we are looking forward to,” Shakesnider said. “So that is why we play tougher teams during our preseason.”

The Tigers will be on the court again at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30 for a consolation round against the loser of the Elk Grove versus Rocklin game tonight.

Shakesnider said it’s important for the squad to get in as many games as possible early on in the season.

“As many as we can get in is the more opportunities that we can learn,” Shakesnider said.

Inderkum is 0-2 for the season.
