The Natomas High School girls’ tennis team took home the Division 8 win Saturday, Sept. 8 following a two-day tournament held in Fresno.

The Nighthawk ladies were undefeated at the California High School Girls Tennis Classic held Sept. 7-8. It was the team’s first place win for the second year in a row at the annual tennis tournament.

“The girls did a fantastic job over all,” Coach Rick Ratliff said. “I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

A total of 127 schools competed in the two-day tournament. Each school’s team was categorized into eight different divisions based on previous competition records.

The Nighthawk ladies played five matches in two days, each match lasting about two hours.

“This tournament gave the girls more confidence in their abilities and talents,” said Ratliff. “They also experienced what it was like to play under pressure.”

The Natomas team defeated 12 high schools in all at the tournament.

“I think staying with each other for two nights makes the girls bond and work together as a whole,” parent Matilda Fernandez said. “The students, parents, coaches and the school’s partnership with each other also contributes to the success.”

The California High School Girls Tennis Classis is the largest high school tournament in the nation.
