The Natomas Nighthawks (0-4) failed to earn their first victory of the season when they were defeated Friday night by the Linden Lions (2-2), 40-21.

Things looked promising for Nighthawks early on when they scored in the first minute of the game. The defense recovered a Linden fumble less than a minute later, allowing the offense to put the Nighthawks up 0-14 at only the 9:12 mark in the first quarter.

Unfortunately, it was all Linden from there as the Lions scored with 4:32 left in the first quarter. Linden dominated the second quarter, tying the game at 14-14 within one minute. The Lions sacked the Nighthawks quarterback for a safety midway through the quarter, bringing the score to 16-14, followed by touchdown to make the score 23-14.
The Nighthawks had their opportunity within 10 yards of the endzone, but their pass was intercepted and returned for a Lions touchdown bringing the score to 30-14 at the half.
The Lions didn’t hold back coming out of the half, scoring at the 9:55 mark to bring the score to 37-14. Natomas eventually got on the board in the third quarter to bring the score to 37-21, but the game had taken its toll.

One Natomas player needed to be taken away on a stretcher for an unknown injury. Linden pulled further away in the fourth quarter with a field goal. Final score: 40-21.

Natomas visits the Rio Linda Knights (3-1) next week.
