Ask Capt. Oliveira: Is Shooting Pigeons Legal?

THE NATOMAS BUZZ | @natomasbuzz

“Is it legal to shoot pigeons with pellet guns in a residential neighborhood?”

Dear Reader,

It is illegal to discharge firearms and air guns within the City limits. BB and pellet guns fall under the category of air guns.

Sacramento City Code (SCC) 9.32.070 (Discharging air guns in city) makes it unlawful for any person to carry or use any air gun for the purpose of discharging or from which are or may be discharged bullets, shot or missiles of any kind within the city limits, except in licensed shooting galleries. It’s also unlawful for anyone under the age of 18 to possess or control any BB or pellet gun within the city unless they are under the supervision of a parent or legal guardian.

For those of you who are wondering where you can shoot air guns legally, I’m not aware of any shooting galleries or ranges within the city, but I did find the Sacramento Valley Airgun Club https://sites.google.com/site/sacvalleyairgunclub/ on the internet. They hold monthly target matches throughout the year in the Sacramento region.

As for the bird that was shot, you may file a report with Animal Care Services at 311 or (916) 808-5011.
