Police suspect a 61-year-old man man was struck and killed by an unknown hit and run driver on W. El Camino Avenue on the Interstate 5 overpass on or before early Sunday morning, according to Sacramento Police Department officials.

The man discovered lying on the roadway was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators are asking the public for any information regarding the case.

“We’re looking for anybody who might have witnessed the incident,” said Sgt. Doug Morse, Sacramento Police Department spokesperson.

Officers arrived at about 2:26 a.m. soon after a nearby security employee reported there was an unresponsive injured man near the road. The man was found next to his badly damaged bike. Detectives, along with criminal scene investigators, determined the man sustained serious injuries after being struck by a vehicle, police reported. They also believe the man and a vehicle were traveling westbound on W. El Camino when the incident occurred.

The Sacramento County Coroner’s office has not yet released the identity of the man pending the notification of the man’s family, police reported.

Morse said it is not known how long the victim was left at the scene after being struck. However, he said the man “couldn’t have been there for…an extended amount of time. That’s something the coroner is going to be able to tell us.”

No one was available at the coroner’s office for more information.

Major Collision Investigation Unit officers are reportedly now investigating the fatal accident.

Sacramento Police officials urge anyone with information about the incident to contact traffic investigators at (916) 808-6030.

Still hoping to hear that the old (Arco) Sleep Train Arena will be used as a new area hospital or a learning/recreation center for teens. Anyone have definite news/plans as to how this land will be utilized?
