Officers were on scene investigating a vehicle accident when they were hailed by a Rent-a-Center employee regarding a theft. A subject ultimately identified as Francis Smith, 45, had stolen a couch and loveseat, dragging them away from the store. The suspect was located down the street by police, in possession of the couch, and taken into custody for theft. Two hours after being released from jail, officers arrested Smith again on suspicion of burglary of a closed business on the 600 block of K Street in Sacramento at approximately 2:30 a.m. on April 23, according to the Sacramento Police Department’s Facebook page. Smith and another suspect, Jacob Sargent, 32, were located near 6th/Capitol, and found to be in possession of stolen property from the burglary. Evidence linking the suspects to the burglary was found at the scene and along the thieves’ flight path. Both men were positively linked to the burglary and booked into The Sacramento County Main Jail for burglary, possession of stolen property and conspiracy.

15-110617 (Arrest): 600 block of Hawkcrest Cir at 0646 hours.
Officers responded to a man detained by security, who was suspected of breaking into an area garage. The suspect was also determined to be in possession of narcotics and taken into custody.

The incident was first reported by a Westlake resident who witnessed the suspect break into the home, Matt Carrol, vice president of operations for Paladin Private Security, told the Natomas Buzz. As the witness contacted the security company, the burglar exited the home and then broke into a nearby vehicle, Carrol continued. A Paladin officer arrived quickly and found the suspect in the process of cracking the ignition of the car to steal it. He then arrested the subject and summoned police, Carrol said. The suspect reportedly was in possession of large quantities of drugs and was wanted on several warrants.

“While things worked out well in this case,” said Carrol. “Citizens should always call police for crimes in progress.”

Carrol stressed that police should be the primary source and security secondary for such cases.

“The suspect likely broke into other homes and cars before we were alerted to him,” he added. “Any burglary discoveries occurring yesterday morning in the area of Hawkcrest Circle should certainly be reported to police and the above case number provided as a potential link.”
