North Natomas residents have been asked to turn off all outdoor irrigation systems and limit indoor water use today as crews work to fix a broken water main.

City officials issued a second reverse 911 call this morning saying limited water use was necessary “to keep the water distribution system ready to respond to emergencies.”

At about 12 a.m. city crews began driving piles inside the levee next to broken water main. The metal sheets are meant to secure the levee and ensure excess water does not impact the repair work.

Area residents have reported lower-than-normal water pressure since the water transmission main was breached at about 11:30 a.m. Monday.

A contractor was performing work for the Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District when it breached a water pipe, city spokesperson Jessica Hess said. The contractor was reportedly working on a waste-water main nearby when a probe hit the water pipe.

The break is on a Reclamation District 1000 levee adjacent to the East Drainage Canal, located east of of Truxel Road and south of Arena Boulevard. RD 1000 is assisting the city to address the break and to ensure levee integrity.

The large transmission main supplies water to distribution lines which bring water to approximately 27,000 homes and businesses in the Natomas area. The pipe is 13 feet below the surface.

It is estimated repair work will be complete by Thursday.

City spokesperson Jessica Hess said customers who feel they are experiencing reduced water pressure should report it by calling 311.
