Peace, Love, Natomas

When it comes to the Authors of Our Own Destiny sculpture in Natomas anything goes – but hate speech.

When a swastika appeared on the “big book” this morning, July 5, Vice Mayor Angelique Ashby took action.

With the help of Scott and Melissa Mathews and husband Zachary Rucker-Christopher, Ashby painted a new message for Natomas on the community canvass. City code enforcement had planned to cover the offending symbol Friday morning.

Members of the public are allowed to paint on the sculpture – located on Del Paso Road, near the north Natomas library branch – at any time.

The swastika is considered hate speech and being investigated by police. Police are looking at surveillance video and checking a spray paint can lid for fingerprints.
