Closing arguments in the murder case of a popular Natomas football coach are scheduled to resume today in Sacramento Superior Court.

Defendants Dejon Wayne Murray, Maurice Edward Reed Jr. and Kenneth Oliver Owens Jr. are on trial for the shooting death of Salvador Heredia-Arriaga during a home-invasion robbery in March 2010.

Heredia-Arriaga worked as a substitute teacher and junior varsity football coach at Natomas High School while attending law school.

“The facts in this case are simple, nothing has changed,” Deputy District Attorney Kevin Greene told the three juries seated in Sacramento Superior Court Monday morning. “This is a robbery, this is a murder, this is a serious crime.”

Greene said eyewitness testimony by Heredia-Arriaga’s friends and evidence recovered by police investigators corroborate testimony made by Tamika Reed, a fourth member of the robbery.

“Nothing like giving up family,” said Greene to the packed court room.

The defense attorney for Murray gave their closing statement on Monday afternoon; attorneys for Reed and Owens are scheduled to make their closing arguments today in front of Judge Patrick Marlette.

Juries for each defendant will review the case and render verdicts separately.
