Natomas Students Succeed At AcaDeca

The awards banquet for the 30th annual Sacramento County Academic Decathlon was held Tuesday night. Inderkum won its first medals ever.

Top-scoring team member Ashley Gonik was awarded silver medals for speech and interview. Vicki Fu won a silver in interview and scored very high in speech. Briyana Mixon received a silver for math, Tamir Al-Quran won bronze for science, and Samaiyah White took bronze for math.

Natomas High’s top team member was Marcus Oliveras-Perez. Each top team member received 100 dollars from Safe Credit Union, the sponsor for this year’s competition.

This was Inderkum’s second time hosting the competition competition and they hope to host again next year. Natomas High entered for the first time and finished just behind it’s neighborhood rival, establishing a new reason for friendly competition.

  1. This is a great story about student sucess in these tough times when it is easy to focus on the bad news.

    Thanks Buzz

  2. And, that’s my boy down there in the NHS photo – the really dark guy. Neither team had a big turnout of “fans” for the bleachers, unlike top schools Folsom and Bella Vista.

Next year, perhaps our principals and student bodies will get out that support like they do for the sports teams. The NHS principal called it the “athletic decathlon” on student announcements and did not show up at the banquet.
