THIRD-GRADER CHANNEL GRIMES HOLDS UP A “SAVE OUR TEACHERS” SIGN WHILE HER FATHER ASKS NATOMAS UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT TRUSTEES NOT TO LAYOFF TEACHERS. MEMBERS OF THE AUDIENCE WORE PINK IN SOLIDARITY WITH THOSE WHO HAVE RECEIVED PINK SLIPS, INCLUDING THE TWO TEACHERS PHOTOGRAPHED HERE.

The color of tonight’s Natomas Unified School District board of trustees meeting at the district offices: Pink. Pink for the five-plus dozen pink slips sent to district employees this past week. The board succeeded in making another series of budget cuts on top of those approved earlier this month.

Another $2.8 million was pared from the district’s budget including closing a second school in 2010-11, reduced funding for the Natomas Schools Foundation, school-site budgets and classroom supplies. A proposal by superintendent Steve Farrar to boost Discovery High School class sizes from 18:1 to 25:1 was not well received by board members and a decision to cut school bussing was not approved.

The board is scheduled to meet again next week to finalize its multi-year budget. The district continues to negotiate labor contracts with its teacher and classified employee unions.
