Get Involved: Keep Police At Natomas Schools

The Natomas Crime & Safety Leadership Team is going to present a letter to the Natomas Unified School District tonight at 7:30 p.m., requesting that our school police officers be reinstated next year.

Last month, the NUSD board of trustees voted unanimously to eliminate the school resource officers on the two high school campuses as a budget-saving item. This will mean no officers on either campus at all.

Sac PD Capt. Daniel Hahn has warned this move will be a devastating blow to the school communities and to surrounding neighborhoods. Natomas Unified School District teachers also oppose the cut for safety reasons. Many neighbors and businesses have voiced concern as well.

If you have time at this last moment and would like to join us we would love to have you with us as we ask the school board to reconsider this budget cut. We are asking that they make the safety of our children, teachers and administrators a priority even in these difficult budget times.

The school district main office is across the street from the giant coke cup on Gateway Oaks and New Market. The Team will be speaking during public comment around 7:30 p.m.

Anyone know what happened with the school resource officers? Are they staying or were they cut?

They were cut back in April – we requested that they reconsider that decision.

I am sorry to hear the board decided to make these cuts, because I do think it will make the safety for the kids in these schools worse, and it’s already bad. I don’t know how much worse it can be for our neighborhoods tho, we’re already facing some pretty severe problems but I really feel for the teachers and the kids in the schools next year.

On the other hand, the reality is the board probably didn’t have alot of choices here, things are bleak everywhere and forecasts for recovery are probably too optimistic in my opinion. Drastic times, and while the board may not have had any other choice, but they certainly had the choice to inform the community upfront, rather than burying it in some reports. If what I hear is true, even Capt. Hahn was not given a heads up.

I doubt any pleading from the community will change their minds, but they are going to have to do something about the safety of the kids in these high schools. I know one kid personally who just a couple weeks ago was “jumped” in the bathroom and had his iPod stolen. These things don’t get reported to the school or the resource officer, the kids know darn well no one will protect them from retaliation down the road.

It is really sad that there even has to be police at our high schools. We have no intention of sending our kids to middle school or high school in Natomas. I have heard NOTHING good about either middle schools or high schools. I have heard about a lot of violence at LGMS. I wish parents would get more involved in their children’s lives and pay attention to what is going on at these schools.
