An application to develop the second phase of a north Natomas retail center has been withdrawn, it was announced at a recent North Natomas Community Coalition meeting.

The project proposed for the northeast corner of Town Center Drive and Del Paso Road was to be anchored by a 38,295-square foot 24 Hour Fitness.

At one point confirmed tenants on the 11.59-acre site included Olive Garden (7,500 square feet), KinderCare (12,000 square feet) and Chase Bank (3,800 square feet). Developer Lewis Management Corp. was reported to also be in talks with a drive-thru coffee purveyor and other restaurants.

The application for “Natomas Town Center II” was first submitted in 2018. Those plans were revised and presented to the North Natomas Community Coalition in late 2019.

About three months into the COVID-19 pandemic — which forced the closure of businesses including indoor fitness centers and gyms nationwide — 24 Hour Fitness filed for bankruptcy protection and announced it would permanently close more than 100 locations. And the Natomas Town Center II project lost its anchor.

City staff was asked to pause the application process while Lewis Management Corp. assessed next steps, Lewis’s vice president of planned communities Rob White told The Natomas Buzz in April 2021.

In May 2021, Olive Garden submitted plans to instead open a new location in the space formerly occupied by Casa Ramos, at 3511 N Freeway Boulevard, in the Sacramento Gateway shopping center, where work is now under way.
