A section of Garden Highway will be closed to all through traffic starting Wednesday as part of ongoing levee work in the Natomas Basin.

The construction, originally scheduled to occur later this summer, has been moved up to take advantage of less traffic due to the current statewide stay-at-home order.

From April 22 to May 31, Garden Highway will be closed between Interstate 5 west to Gateway Oaks Drive. The 24-hour, 7-days-a-week road closure is to install a seepage cutoff wall as part of levee improvements meant to reduce risk of flooding in the Natomas Basin. The bike path along this route will also be closed.

Vehicle traffic and cyclists will be detoured during construction.

Drivers trying to access locations west of Interstate 5 are advised to exit at West El Camino Avenue, travel west, turn left onto Gateway Oaks Drive, and then turn right onto Garden Highway. Drivers trying to reach Interstate 5 from locations west of I-5 will be detoured onto Gateway Oaks Drive, turn right onto West El Camino Avenue and then enter I-5 South. Drivers trying to go north are advised to follow the same detour, exiting onto Garden Highway and then re-entering the northbound lanes.

Cyclists will be re-routed around the closure along Gateway Oaks Drive, West El Camino Avenue and Natomas Park Drive.

West El Camino Avenue east of Northgate Boulevard in Natomas is also currently closed to through traffic as part of levee improvements and is expected remain closed through May.
