The Natomas farmers’ market will return for a second season at the Promenade starting this Saturday, May 4.

The market is scheduled to be open 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturdays at the shopping center, which is located at 3637 N. Freeway Boulevard, off Gateway Boulevard. The market is expected to remain open through at least October.

“Natomas community support was substantially greater in 2012 at the Promenade than in 2011 when we were at the high school location – about 30 per cent higher,” market coordinator Dan Best said at the end of the 2012 season.

Best said mid-September through October last year, Natomas farmers’ market customer numbers dropped dramatically each market Saturday even though the sun was out, weather was unseasonably good, and there were a large number of farmers still selling. But he said he was hopeful the market could start operating year round in 2013 with farmer and customer support.

“Our intention is to reopen in the sunny spring skies the first week of May … for the beginning of cherry season and the peak of asparagus,” Best said.
