Embers apparently from an earlier grass fire in Natomas ignited a palm tree near the Westlake neighborhood off Bayou Road tonight, June 18.

A resident spotted the flames at about 8:55 p.m., photographed here, in one of a pair of palm trees located not far from the earlier fire. Sacramento Fire was called and flagged down by residents upon arrival.

The trees were doused with water and fire crews remained on the scene an hour later, at 10:20 p.m., chopping down both palm trees.

Plumes of dark smoke from the grass fire could be seen from downtown during the earlier blaze which started about 3 p.m. That fire burned an estimated 25 acres; crews were reported mopping up at about 4 p.m.
