Councilwoman Angelique Ashby opposes the newly hired city manager’s proposed pay package.
The Sacramento city council and Mayor Kevin Johnson last week approved hiring John F. Shirey as the new city manager and are expected to vote on his salary and other benefits at tonight’s city council meeting.
Natomas representative Ashby told THE NATOMAS BUZZ she plans to vote against the proposed package which starts Shirey’s salary at $258,000. Shirey would also receive a car allowance, contributions to a deferred compensation account of $15,000 a year and professional association fees – making his the highest pay in the region for similar posts, according to media reports.

“I am voting against it because it’s way too much money,” Ashby said.
Shirey is scheduled to start work Sept. 1. As city manager he will be responsible for the overall function of the city including a total operating budget of $812 million and a workforce of 4,000 employees.
