Delays Expected with Upcoming I-80 Closures

Caltrans is warning motorists to expect lengthy eastbound delays related to nighttime construction work on Interstate 80 in North Sacramento from Friday, July 10 to Saturday, July 11.

The overnight roadwork is part of the ongoing “80 Across the Top” project that covers approximately 10 miles from the Sacramento River to Watt Avenue. Eastbound motorists can expect lane restrictions and multiple freeway entrances and exits to be shut down from early evening hours to the next morning.

The scheduled construction work will also remove the segment of the eastbound express lanes from Northgate Boulevard to Longview Drive, which will create three continuous eastbound lanes after Northgate. Removing this stretch of express lanes will allow crews to prepare for the start of construction on westbound Interstate 80, which is scheduled to begin July 18. The eastbound express lane route from West El Camino Avenue to Northgate will continue to be in effect.

The staging of equipment, safety lighting, and cone placement will begin by 8 p.m. During the upcoming roadwork, all eastbound Interstate 80 on- and off-ramps from Northgate to Winters Street will be closed from 11 p.m. Friday, July 10 through 9 a.m. Saturday, July 11. Traffic for these exits will need to detour onto Longview Drive and back onto westbound I-80 for access.

The following eastbound ramp locations are expected to be closed:

  • Northgate Boulevard off-ramp
  • Northgate Boulevard loop on-ramp
  • Northgate Boulevard slip on-ramp
  • Norwood Avenue off-ramp
  • Norwood Avenue on-ramp
  • Raley Boulevard off-ramp
  • Raley Boulevard on-ramp
  • Raley Boulevard slip on-ramp
  • Winters Street off-ramp

Local cross streets for these ramps will remain open for northbound and southbound directions. Extensive delays are expected and Caltrans advises motorists to plan for additional travel time or to use alternate routes.

Motorists travelling on Interstate 5 are urged to use Arena Boulevard and Del Paso Road for access into the North Natomas area. Local residents may experience nighttime construction noise including jack hammer type and commercial truck beeping.
