The man who bludgeoned his young son to death in Natomas two years ago has been sentenced for his crimes.

Phillip Raymond Hernandez was sentenced to 26 years to life in prison, District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert announced today, May 1.

A jury found Hernandez guilty of first-degree murder and the use of a weapon on March 23, 2015.

On February 26, 2013 Hernandez went into the backyard of his home, grabbed a hatchet, broke through the sliding glass door and brutally attacked his 9-year-old son, Matthew Hernandez, who was sleeping on the couch. The child, then a student at Jefferson Elementary School, died at the scene from blunt force trauma to the head.

Hernandez was found walking on the street soon after and was taken into custody by police.
