The  Inderkum PTSA was joined by Sabor Latino student club members earlier this week to paint the interactive community sculpture in honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month.

National Hispanic Heritage Month is an annual event celebrated Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 each year. Nearly one of every three students in the Natomas Unified School District is Hispanic, according to Inderkum PTSA president Sonia Mercado.

“The PTSA is also proud to celebrate and honor Hispanic Heritage Month,” Mercado said of the painting.

Inderkum PTSA, Spanish scholar teacher and Sabor Latino adviser Maria Atherley and members of Inderkum’s Sabor Latino student club painted the “Authors of Our Own Destiny” sculpture in a colorful design which pays homage to the Hispanic culture.

Paint for the project was donated by Franklin Jackon, general manager of Wal-Mart in Natomas.
