The Amgen Tour of California gets under way on Sunday and city officials are warning area drivers of related road closures and impacts on traffic.

This year’s Amgen bicycle race is scheduled to begin at the State Capitol at 10:50 a.m. on May 11. The Stage 1 route heads north out of the city limits and ends at about 3:30 p.m. back at the Capitol.

The event will include rolling road closures State Capitol as well as parking restrictions downtown.

Streets along the outbound race circuit includes westbound Richards Boulevard, northbound Jibboom into Discovery Park, westbound on Garden Highway until the city limits and east on Riego Road. Cyclists are expected to be on those roadways shortly after the tour begins until about 12 p.m., according to Amgen estimates.

Sacramento Police Department officers expect the above closures to last 20 to 30 minutes at each location. Officers will allow vehicles and pedestrians to cross the route as long as the lead race vehicle has not yet reached that particular location. Emergency vehicles will be allowed but local access will be limited.
