Eight-year-old Natomas resident Akshaj Mehta writes fiction stories.

“Akshaj was around 3 years old when we first realized that he wants to compose short poems,” said the third grader’s parents Sudeep and Sumiti Mehta.

Mehta, who attends Natomas Charter School’s Star Academy, has written eight stories to date, three of which will later be included as chapter in a planned book titled “Super Mouse.” He has participated in the Sherlock Holmes Writing Contest, organized by Funderland, and was recognized by KVIE, the local public television network.

“I try to set aside time for writing every day but more realistically we write at least three times a week,” Mehta’s teacher Tammy Fraser said. “Sometimes we have a specific skill we are working on and other times it’s just free writing time. Most of the kids appreciate the extra time to revisit, revise, and finish old entries.”

This is the time Mehta gets to write and share his stories – a recent writing finished with a cliff hanger.

“Even some of our most reluctant writers have really come out of their shell this year as far as getting their ideas onto paper,” Fraser said. “This is in part to our authors like Akshaj who are enthusiastic to share what they’ve been doing.”

Not only does Mehta enjoy writing, but he is also shares his stories by reading to other children in libraries, at preschools and at foster homes – which is where he will be for Christmas.

“I love going to school and my teacher shares my writing with the class,” Mehta said. “I read my stories in class.”

Some of Mehta’s stories include “My adventures in Pyramids,” “Creep out,” “Rise of the Pharaohs” and “Mystery of the Green Pole.” His favorite is “My Adventure in Pyramids” because in the story, Mehta said, he was in pyramids playing video games with mummies.

“…I always wanted to go and see the pyramids with my own eyes,” he said.

Akshaj’s parents say, “Everyday, he continues to surprise us with his talent and make us feel proud of his achievements. He is a good role model for his younger brother.”
