The young man hit by a truck while riding his bike on Natomas Boulevard Monday afternoon has died.

Luis Gutierrez, 18, sustained major injuries as a result of the Oct. 7 accident. He died two days later, on Oct. 9, according to Sacramento County Coroner records.

The official cause of Gutierrez’s death is listed as a motor vehicle accident.

According to police, Gutierrez was crossing the intersection on his bike at Natomas Boulevard and North Bend Drive when the accident occurred at about 1:30 p.m. Police said it appeared Gutierrez was riding in the crosswalk, but crossing against the red light.

The driver of the truck stopped and remained on the scene, according to police. Police said it did not appear that speed or DUI were factors in the accident.

Natomas Boulevard was closed to southbound traffic from North Park Drive to Del Paso Road for several hours Monday while police investigated the accident.

Sources say Gutierrez lived in the Natomas area and graduated from Inderkum High School in May.
