After 12 years of allowing public joint-use of the Natomas Park Elementary School playground, which has the only basketball court in the area, the gate has been locked for weeks. What happened?

Director of Public Policy Michelle Kille in Vice Mayor Angelique Ashby’s office sent us an answer from Michael Cannon, Executive Director of Facilities & Planning for the Natomas Unified School District:

“You are correct that the gate from Natomas Park into the east side of the playground at Natomas Park Elementary has been locked (not welded). This was done earlier this year in response to three instances of vandalism to school buildings and bathrooms facing the playground this year, and in response to concerns raised by our insurance carrier regarding unsupervised after-hours use of school playgrounds.”
