Natomas Chamber Pitches Arena Plan

Written By NatomasBuzz.com on Thursday, January 6, 2011 | 9:52 AM

Natomas Chamber of Commerce reps will be on hand this morning to lend support for a plan that would have a new arena built in Natomas.

Four plans submitted to Mayor Kevin Johnson's "Sacramento First" task force by a Dec. 30 deadline, including a revised proposal by Natomas ESC Parnters, will be presented during a public hearing 10 a.m. today in Old City Hall. Sacramento First is the citizens’ committee created in 2009 by Johnson.

The Natomas chamber supports the Natomas ESC Partners proposal saying it is the best alternative for Natomas and the city of Sacramento. The Natomas site, which is already owned by the city, is also the only location adjacent to two major freeways, served by five freeway interchanges with local access roads designed to handle arena traffic, as well as easy access to the airport and regional bus and light rail.

"In tough economic times, the more economical plan to utilize the current 'shovel ready' arena site with existing infrastructure should be given the highest consideration," reads the Natomas chamber's web site.

Natomas ESC Partners include developers: NBBJ (Staples Center), Skanska (New Meadowlands, NY, Inderkum HS, Hammes Company (LA Stadium, Lambeau Field) and NLA (US Federal Courthouse, North Natomas Library).

Natomas District Seeks Public Support

About three dozen people attended a meeting last night at the invitation of Natomas superintendent Bobbie Plough to discuss ways to support the financially challenged school district.

"I believe we have a creative and vibrant community anxious to mobilize in support of our schools," wrote Plough, inviting parents and interested community members to the session. "Please join me in developing a plan to provide the financial support that our schools - our children - deserve in order to create a world class educational system for this community."

Meeting participants brainstormed in small groups and later came together to discuss several suggestions they felt could help the Natomas school district. At the end of the evening, the three top ideas were: facilitating volunteerism, event marketing, and naming rights for businesses.

Former school board candidate, Ryan Herche, attended the meeting and posted a poll on Facebook seeking input on the options discussed. Click here for the poll.

Sign up sheets seeking help to revive the defunct Natomas Schools Foundation and to research and write grants were also circulated. Said Elena Quintero, PTSA president at Inderkum High School, "It was definitely a productive meeting."

Gardenland Suspect Dies After Struggle

A domestic violence suspect died Wednesday afternoon after struggling with police.

At about 6 p.m., Sac PD officers responded to a residence near Harding and American Avenue on a domestic violence call

When officers arrived to the scene, they met the female victim outside of the residence who said she recently separated from the suspect. Officers confirmed the victim previously obtained a restraining order against the suspect.

The victim reportedly called police after the suspect kicked in the door to the residence and began punching her several times. At one point during the attack, the suspect is said to have passed out on the floor, possibly under the influence of narcotics. The victim and her 6-year-old son fled the house to call the police.

After speaking with the victim, officers went into the residence and contacted the suspect who appeared to be passed out and lying on the floor. The suspect suddenly woke and began fighting with officers.

While the officers were struggling with the suspect they realized he had stopped breathing and immediately began CPR. The Sac Fire responded to the scene and transported the suspect to a local hospital where the he later died.

The cause of death is not known at this tie. Sac PD reports no lethal or less-than-lethal weapons were utilized by law enforcement personnel during the struggle. The incident is under investigation.

Natomas Dirt: Facts About Sunflowers

Written By NatomasBuzz.com on Monday, January 3, 2011 | 12:01 AM

BY BILL BIRD

I thought I would share some interesting tidbits I learned about growing sunflowers this year in Northern California. The wife and I grew two varieties -- including the Moulin Rouge. There's my lovely wife tending to this year's sunflower garden from earlier this summer. Nice eh? Watch it! Sunflowers are a TRAP! They are a CURSE upon man!

And here's why:

1. One sunflower plant equals fifty sunflower plants next year:

This is a true statement. I was a bit worried when my wife started ripping out dead sunflowers from one of the planter beds in late summer, but never thought all of those seeds hitting the ground during the removal process would germinate. Boy howdy, was I wrong. As you can probably tell from these photos, I'm the proud owner of a small sunflower forest -- which continues to grow at a rather rapid and alarming rate. I thought that the winter freeze would kill the new plants off. Hah! Sunflowers laugh at freezing temperatures. All of that green you see? While it's true that some of them are weeds, the vast majority of plants inside and around the planter bed are, in fact, sunflowers that germinated from seed that fell to the ground during the removal process during the late fall.

2. Sunflowers are "plant friendly" and grow well in mixed beds:

WRONG! Sunflowers take over every square inch of space and knock out the hardiest of vegetable and/or flower plants. They are a curse upon all gardeners. They cannot be contained.

3. Sunflowers make excellent cut flowers in vase arrangements:

FALSE! There is no such thing as "vase arrangements" when it comes to sunflowers. "Vase Arrangements" implies flowers other than sunflowers. What other flowers are available after the sunflowers kill everything off? A vase full of sunflowers looks good. A "vase arrangement" of sunflowers is an oxymoron.

4. Sunflowers require good soil, fertilizer and love to thrive:

FALSE! Sunflowers will grow in asphalt! They'll grow straight out of concrete! Good soil, bad soil, rocky soil, rocky asphalt, a bowl of acid, it doesn't matter. Sunflowers take over.

5. Once you grow sunflowers, you'll always have sunflowers, whether you want them or not:

TRUE!!! Sunflowers laugh at Roundup, blowtorches, plutonium and nuclear weapons. The scientist who predicted that only cockroaches would survive a nuclear holocaust obviously never met a sunflower.

6. Sunflowers are a gardeners best friend:

FALSE! A more true statement would be "sunflowers are a gardener's best curse!" Now that I have stated the lesson of the day, does anyone, perchance, need sunflower starter plants or sunflower seeds? I appear to have too much of both.

Natomas 2010: The Year In Review

Written By NatomasBuzz.com on Saturday, January 1, 2011 | 5:00 PM

2010 started out on a low note in Natomas with Sac PD investigating the homicide of a party goer at a teen event held after hours at Studio 18.

Things started looking up just a week later when the North Natomas Library opened its doors to the public with great fanfare. It didn't take long for the library to adjust its schedule and add weekend hours for patrons!  Later, the Authors of Our Own Destiny sculpture would bring out community artisans and critics.

Natomas residents saw some businesses – including several small eateries – fail over the year due to the economy. But the abrupt closure of warehouse giant Sam's Club came as a shock to many, including the store's employees.

Early in the year, several groups submitted proposals for a new arena in Sacramento. The complicated three-way land swap plan that would have moved the state fairgrounds to Natomas became the media darling early on, but failed to gain necessary support. All year, the Natomas Chamber of Commerce lobbied in support of a plan to keep the arena in Natomas. Natomas ESC Partners submitted an updated proposal on Dec. 30 which the chamber continues to promote.

The Natomas Unified School District money troubles continued in 2010 as the school board considered which elementary school – or schools – to close according to their budget plan. A series of public forums were held and a “short” list of schools recommended for closure made by an advisory group. But in the end, the district changed directions entirely and shut down Leroy F. Greene Middle School, amid rumors of rampant gang activity, citing poor test scores.

In a crime that shocked the Natomas community, beloved son and football coach Salvador Heredia-Arriaga was killed when he walks in on a home-invasion robbery. Several suspects were arrested in connection with the crime.

The neighborhood definitely got a boost of confidence when ground broke on the new North Natomas firestation and Kaiser closed escrow on property near Interstate 80. The opening of Black Bear Diner, Five Guys Burgers, and the promise of several other businesses were hints of promise for the Natomas region's future.

The Natomas Unified School District hired Bobbie Plough to replace Steve Farrar who retired the previous year and said farewell – again – to Dr. General Davie who served as interim superintendent during the search process.

Money for much-needed levee work along the rivers was approved and Natomas homeowners given a temporary reprieve from flood insurance hikes. Controversy erupted, however, when it was determined city officials OKd permits for new homes in Natomas where building is prohibited and threatened federal funding.

The primary election is held and the results of a three-way race for the city council District One seat are not final for several weeks. Newcomer Angelique Ashby wins, avoids a runoff race and takes office in November.

Natomas saw two officer-related shootings in 2010. The first was in response to a domestic disturbance call and the second was in connection to an assault on a young person. The suspect died in the second incident.

A farmers' market returned to Natomas and met great support. The market, held Saturday mornings at in the Inderkum parking lot is closed for the winter season, but promises to return in May.

Another sad note this year was the death of an 80-year-old woman who was hit by a car as she crossed North Park Drive at Banfield Drive – the third reported pedestrian versus vehicle accident at this location.

The year wrapped up with the Natomas school board race which saw both incumbents re-elected and the troubled school district's ongoing financial struggles.
