For A Good Cause: With A Little Help From Friends

Written By NatomasBuzz.com on Tuesday, July 6, 2010 | 12:01 AM

Both Natomas libraries get by with a little help from their friends - Friends of the Library volunteers, that is!

When library funding got cut in half, so, too, did the library's ability to offer free programs to the community.

"Our job, in the past, has been to pay for programs that were not covered by the library or for objects and items that the library did not have in their budget," said Nancy Christ, North Natomas Friends treasurer.

For example, the North Natomas Friends have:
  • Made $3,000 selling donated books and donated $2,250 toward library programming and events.
  • Purchased a heavy-duty die cut machine for library bulletin board displays and projects.
  • Purchased two five-gallon beverage containers for library events.
  • Purchased a one-year subscription to The New York Times for use by library patrons.
  • Donated books to neighborhood schools, including NP3 and ARC.
  • Plans to purchase floor mats for Toddler Time in the community room.
  • Holds monthly Natomas Book Club meetings.
"We couldn’t have done this without the support of the Natomas community through their book donations, their volunteer hours (we have over 50 community members, from both North and South Natomas and beyond, who donate time to the book store and the library), and by buying the books we sell in the Friends’ Store," said Christ.

Here's a look at the newest art added to the "Authors of Our Own Destiny" book sculpture in front of the North Natomas Library. Library officials want to make sure Natomas folks know they are welcome to contribute their own art anytime.

"Hopefully, it will become a frequently changing canvas for the community to use," said Amy Calhoun, Youth Services Librarian.

Natomas District Squashes Middle School Rumors

Written By NatomasBuzz.com on Thursday, July 1, 2010 | 12:20 AM

Rumors that Natomas Middle School students will mingle with H. Allen Hight Elementary School students when school starts August 10 are reportedly just that - rumors.

According to Natomas Unified School District officials, there are no plans for middle school students to occupy elementary classrooms at the H. Allen Hight Learning Center which houses two schools on North Park Drive in Natomas.

Apparently, an unauthorized message sent by the elementary school's administration to parent leaders fueled the rumor mill flames which spurred a letter-writing campaign to the district school board members in protest.

A telephone message from Howard Kornblum, Interim Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services, apologized for the communication error. In a message to THE NATOMAS BUZZ, the superintendent's office confirmed Natomas Middle School has enough space to accommodate all the 7th and 8th graders expected in fall.
