Confused About TV Reports On School Closures?

It's no wonder...

Inaccurate reporting by CBS 13 ( http://www.cbs13.com/video/?id=68075@kovr.dayport.com ) that the decision is down to two schools when, in fact, there are three on the list: Bannon Creek, Natomas Park E.S. and Jefferson. Among other things, also reporting the meeting was moved to the Natomas High School theater because so many people showed up, when the meeting was planned to be held at that very location in anticipation of public participation.

Fox 40 (http://www.fox40.com/news/headlines/ktxl-news-natomasschoolclosinglist,0,293853.story ) says the "district blames the economy on the decision to close a school" when everyone who has been paying attention knows budget cuts are necessary due to ongoing reductions in state education funds. The money simply is not there and more will likely be cut.

And, last but not least, News 10 (http://www.news10.net/news/story.aspx?storyid=75102&catid=2 ) reporting the school closure is "not a matter of if, but when" - the closure would be effective for the 2010-2010-11 school year. Also that last night was "the first in a series" of meetings when all school closure criteria meetings were open to the public including two public forums specifically meant to get public input. Also reported that there are "three more public meetings" when there actually will be five, including one at each of the three recommended school sites, a board workshop and March 10 board meeting during which a decision is expected.

These media reports - and some inaccurate e-mails making the rounds - just compound an issue that is already difficult for everyone involved and becoming more and more divisive here in Natomas.

Parent Campaign Receives Twin Rivers Support

Recognizing the State’s fiscal condition and its impact on public education monies, the Twin Rivers Unified School District board of trustees is endorsing the efforts of Support California Kids.

Support California Kids is a grassroots movement of parents, grandparents, guardians and concerned community members committed to protecting the future of California’s six million public school students.

Twin Rivers, like many California school districts, is being forced to reduce a significant percentage of its budget due to cuts to our state’s educational budget. This year, Twin Rivers lost 38 million dollars due to state budget cuts, with a projected 36 million loss in funding for the upcoming school year. It operates Regency Park Elementary and Smythe Academy in the Natomas area.

“Our families deserve to know how much funding is being eliminated and what we can do to work together to prevent any further cuts and provide local school districts flexibility,” said Board President Michelle Rivas.

Support California Kids was started by families in the Elk Grove Unified School District and is now reaching out to families throughout Sacramento to broaden the movement. The group will host a community meeting in the Twin Rivers district 6:30 p.m. Feb. 23 at Village School, 6845 Larchmont Dr, North Highlands.

Parents Fight Plans To Close Natomas School

The Natomas Unified School District board of trustees heard from several parents at their meeting last night protesting plans to close an elementary school next year.

In some cases, testimony focused on specific schools put on a "short list" for possible closure. They are: Bannon Creek, Natomas Park and Jefferson elementary schools.

The board meeting was the latest in a series of steps put in motion last fall when the Natomas school district was faced with cutting millions of dollars in order to balance its budget three years out as required by state education code. The board at the time approved closing one, maybe two, elementary schools over that period for an estimated savings of $400,000 per school, per year.

Comments from the crowd ranged from pleas not to close any schools to threats that school closures will translate into parents enrolling their children in charter schools, private schools or moving out of the district altogether. The comments followed the board's school closure committee report on their findings and recommendations.

The board will meet next on Feb. 24 for a workshop on the school closure plans and community meetings have been set for the three schools on the list.

Cops Nab Teen Suspected In School Burglaries

Written By NatomasBuzz.com on Monday, February 8, 2010 | 7:43 PM

Sac PD believes they have in custody the person responsible for a series of burglaries that plagued the NP3 and Westlake Charter schools campus on Del Paso Road during the months of October and November.

The schools were burglarized several times with personal electronics and school computer equipment among the items stolen. Parents and staff rallied to patrol the school in an effort to prevent future burglaries.

"Last week, detectives were able to connect several of the burglaries to a 14 yr. old subject that was already in custody for armed robbery," wrote police Capt. Daniel Hahn in an e-blast to area residents. "He was additionally charged with four of the burglaries to the charter school."

The boy was previously arrested for a robbery on 6:45 p.m. on Nov. 29, 2009 at Walgreens on Del Paso Road. He reportedly robbed a woman in her car at gun point as she was in the store parking lot.

"He was still in custody for the robbery when he was charged with the additional burglaries," wrote Hahn. "There haven't been any further burglaries to the charter schools."
