North Area Mourns Death Of Preschooler

The mood was somber this morning at Smythe Academy on Northgate as the school mourned the death of student Jonathan Vazquez.

A makeshift memorial of candles, stuffed animals and notes to the Vazquez family marks the spot where the 4-year-old preschooler was struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run accident as he rode his scooter to school.

The American flag flew at half mast and parents gathered in small groups to talk with each other about the devastating events of the previous day.

Counselors, chaplains from the Sacramento PD, and district staff are all on the Gardenland campus today to provide support to students.

Those interested in helping the family may make donations in the name of Jonathan's father, Sergio Vazquez, to Bank of the West account # 1700-134-29.

Homes For Sale In Defunct Development

The cyclone fencing at the Natomas Meadows development off Del Paso Road is now open and "for sale" signs posted in front of model homes which have stood empty for more than two years.

Natomas Meadows was meant to be Pardee Homes' debut in the Sacramento-area housing market and already spent about $600,000 an acre on the land and millions more on streets and utilities.

The project was mothballed in November 2007 and the 100-acre site reportedly purchased by the Granite Bay Development Co. a year later.
