North Area Mourns Death Of Preschooler

The mood was somber this morning at Smythe Academy on Northgate as the school mourned the death of student Jonathan Vazquez.

A makeshift memorial of candles, stuffed animals and notes to the Vazquez family marks the spot where the 4-year-old preschooler was struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run accident as he rode his scooter to school.

The American flag flew at half mast and parents gathered in small groups to talk with each other about the devastating events of the previous day.

Counselors, chaplains from the Sacramento PD, and district staff are all on the Gardenland campus today to provide support to students.

Those interested in helping the family may make donations in the name of Jonathan's father, Sergio Vazquez, to Bank of the West account # 1700-134-29.

Homes For Sale In Defunct Development

The cyclone fencing at the Natomas Meadows development off Del Paso Road is now open and "for sale" signs posted in front of model homes which have stood empty for more than two years.

Natomas Meadows was meant to be Pardee Homes' debut in the Sacramento-area housing market and already spent about $600,000 an acre on the land and millions more on streets and utilities.

The project was mothballed in November 2007 and the 100-acre site reportedly purchased by the Granite Bay Development Co. a year later.

Gardenland Preschooler Dies In Hit-And-Run

Written By NatomasBuzz.com on Monday, November 30, 2009 | 3:28 PM

The 4-year-old preschooler struck during a hit-and-run accident this morning has died, Twin Rivers Unified School district officials confirmed this afternoon. The accident occurred at about 8 a.m. when the Smythe Academy student was hit by a vehicle while walking to school with his grandmother and older brother.

The vehicle was exiting the school parking lot when it hit the boy and dragged him several feet before fleeing south on Northgate Blvd. Emergency medical personnel responded to the scene and transported the boy to the UC Davis Medical Center where he later died from his injuries

"We’re devastated about the loss of this child and are doing whatever we can to support his family, fellow students, staff, and community," Twin Rivers Unified School District spokeswoman Trinette Marquis told NATOMASBUZZ.COM. "We hope anyone with information about this incident will step forward and tell police."

The vehicle was described as a newer, dark colored sedan, possibly a Maxima, and may have front end damage. The driver was described as a man with a dark complexion.

The Sacramento Police Department urges anyone with information pertaining to this incident to contact Crime Alert at (916) 443-HELP or text in a tip to 274637 (CRIMES) or call the traffic detectives directly at (916) 808-6030. Natomas Flood Insurance Update From Matsui

Dear Friends,

Ensuring that my constituents have access to affordable flood insurance policies is one of my top priorities. I would like to provide you with an update with regards to FEMA's Preferred Risk Policies (PRP), which, I hope will be of welcome news to many Natomas residents.

As you know, last year FEMA remapped the Natomas Basin into an AE flood zone. Because of the confusion surrounding this remapping effort, FEMA extended the eligibility of PRP renewals, allowing an additional year of PRP rates for those renewing their flood insurance policies prior to December 8, 2009. However, in recent weeks a problem arose when some homeowners who bought PRP policies in the weeks prior to December 8, 2008 attempted to renew at the PRP rate. Because new policies did not go into effect for 30 days (often after December 8, 2008), they were unable to renew their flood insurance policy at the PRP rate.

I contacted FEMA and requested that they correct this oversight. I am pleased to inform you that my request to allow a 30 day extension in their renewal deadline has been approved. The deadline for renewal will now be January 8, 2010. This will allow people who brought flood insurance policies prior to December 8, 2008 but whose policies did not go into affect for 30 days, to renew at the PRP rate. Please see the enclosed memorandum from FEMA for more information on this change in policy which has just been implemented.

Please share this information with your neighbors so they can contact their insurance agent and bring their attention to this matter. I hope you find this information useful, and please feel free to contact my office at (916) 498-5600 if you have further questions about this issue.

Sincerely,
DORIS O. MATSUI
Member of Congress
