In The News: NUSD Layoffs Approved

Written By NatomasBuzz.com on Wednesday, August 5, 2009 | 5:56 PM

The Natomas Unified School District board of trustees this morning voted unanimously to proceed with laying off dozens of teachers for an estimated savings of $2 million.

The Sac Bee erroneously reports the layoffs go into effect just "days" after the school year starts, forgetting there are three year-round campuses which already have classes in session and many students returned to school earlier this week.

Today's decision was made during an 8 a.m. closed session the results of which were disclosed several hours later via a statment by NUSD superintendent Steve Farrar.

Farrar's message outlines the layoff process previously reported by THE BUZZ and makes mention of the 12 unpaid furlough days being taken by classified employees to save $500,000 per year (for the next two years), that unrepresented/ management employees are taking eight furlough days and a freeze in step-and-column increases for a savings of $260,000 a year, and that a contract with Natomas teachers is still pending.
"With our modified traditional schools beginning class on Monday, we are now in the process of finalizing the teaching assignments for the coming year based on seniority and appropriate credentials. Teachers who are on the final layoff list will not be given a class to teach for the first week of school but will be assisting in other ways with classroom instructional duties until the layoffs take effect on Aug. 14."
On Friday, August 7 New 10's Live_Online at 11 a.m. will feature Steve Farrar, superintendent of the Natomas Unified School District. Click here to find out more.

NUSD Officials To Vote On Proposed Layoffs

THE BUZZ has learned an administrative law judge rendered a decision Friday that would allow the Natomas Unified School District to lay off up to 58.1 full-time equivalent teaching jobs for the upcoming school year. Teacher reps have since been going over the judge's decision and preparing for the possible outcomes.

The district's board of trustees will hold a special board meeting 8 a.m. tomorrow (Wednesday) to decide whether to approve and implement layoffs. If approved, the school district apparently will not put the layoff into effect until close of business on August 14. As THE BUZZ understands it, this means those laid off will report to a work site until that time.

Sources tell THE BUZZ district officials has started contacting teachers displaced due to collapsed classes in seniority order, scheduling appointments for them to view the NUSD job boards, and asking them to choose from available classes. Arrangements are being made to have moving crews assist with last-minute classroom moves.

We have also learned the Natomas Teacher Association's has reached a tentative agreement with the Natomas school district. If approve by the association's Executive Board and Rep Council, a contract vote will take place this month.

Currently, the proposal is to set K-3 class size at 26 for one year only in the Natomas district. Also on the table is a two-year freeze of teacher's step and column pay schedule and there are no furloughs -- which is a surprise to some THE BUZZ talked to.

THE BUZZ is told that even if some teachers are rehired based on a NTA contract vote, which is NOT guaranteed, it could be the end of August before they'd be back at work. If there are high enrollments, the district office may rehire some teachers sooner without having an agreement in place.

Stay tuned to this developing story...

Natomas Journal Officially Closes Shop

Kimberly Scott Robb, representing the family of Natomas Journal publisher Will Craig, who died earlier this year, today released the following statement exclusively to the NATOMAS BUZZ:

“With great regret, we have decided to terminate publication of the Natomas Journal. We had hoped one of those in Natomas who wanted to see the paper continued, would step up and take it over. Although there have been several interested parties, and so many people have expressed their dismay at the idea of the Journal closing, it appears that none have the same passion for the paper and Natomas to devote the time and effort that Will did. He would have hated seeing it disintegrate.

“Therefore, rather than have an outsider come in with an inferior version, the Natomas Journal will be discontinued in his memory. The Journal has meant a lot to us, and seeing it end makes me personally, very, very sad – but dedicating it to Will makes it more bearable. Thank you, Natomas, for your enduring loyalty and friendship. I wish the very best for our lovely community.”
