Seen In Natomas: Two For One, More Coffee Fun

Scratch that... We were sorely disappointed when we went into Peet's this morning and were told the promotion had been pulled the day before due to "profit losses," according to one of the barristas. Would've gone to Starbucks if we knew that.

THE BUZZ was pleasantly surprised when we picked up our morning java at Peet's Coffee & Tea in Raley's. Coffee drinks are buy one, get one free (of equal or lesser value) all week long!

Heard In Natomas: Purses Snatched At Raley's

A loyal NATOMAS BUZZ reader contacted us this evening to let us know about two purse snatchings in as many days this past weekend at Raley's on Natomas Boulevard.

K.C. tells us the first incident occurred
INSIDE the grocery store on Friday afternoon and again the following day.

The thieves loitered around the produce section and then snatched K.C.'s purse from her cart, ran on foot out of the store and down the sidewalk to a waiting car in the Pick Up Stix back parking lot. A second purse was snatched on Saturday after which a foot chase ensued and a license plate number apparently recorded.

"The odds of me or the other victim getting anything back is very remote," writes K.C. "I want to get you the heads up so that you can alert our neighbors so that there's isn't a third victim."

Or more, for that matter.

In The News: Goodwill Finds A New Home

The Sac Bee over the weekend reported Goodwill Industries will locate a new thrift store at the old Tower Records site at Watt and El Camino avenues.

An excerpt:

Negotiations have fallen through for a store at another site in Natomas.

That 15,000-square-foot site was originally occupied by a Borders bookstore that closed last year. After plans about Goodwill occupying the store were revealed, neighbors of the shopping center, at 4650 Natomas Blvd., protested in online blogs.

Points of clarification: Borders closed early THIS year and while we agree there was a lot of online activity around the proposal to locate Goodwill in North Natomas, not ALL blogging was in protest. (Life and Living in the Big Tomato posted this article and Joe Sacramento posted this one.)

The Bee's article cites a Goodwill official as not knowing "why lease negotiations fell through" at the Natomas site. We think NATOMAS BUZZ readers have an idea...

Oddly enough, the article was posted online in the Bee's obituaries section.

Police Activity Saturday Night In North Natomas

THE BUZZ has received several messages asking about police activity late Saturday in the Natomas Park development. Here's the lowdown from Sac PD Capt. Daniel Hahn:

5/2/09

10:10pm, 5000 block of Archcrest, Burglary/Arrest, Natomas Park

We received a call from the resident of the above location about some people breaking into her house. Graveyard Officer Bell arrived within 3 minutes and observed 3 suspects running from the house to a grey
buick lesabre. Officer Bell attempted to stop the car but it fled south on Archcrest and west on Aimwell - running the stop sign. When the suspects entered the intersection of Aimwell/N. Bend, they collided with another car. All 3 suspects fled the car on foot. Officer Bell gave chase as the suspects jumped fences. One suspect was found hiding in a garbage can on Lyman Cir. One suspect was located with the K-9 (the dog bit him) in a back yard on Menard. The 3rd suspect was not located. Numerous Officers, Helicopter and K-9 were used to locate the suspects. Some property was recovered that was taken from the house. This is possibly related to a felony assault that occurred in the South area the night before. Anthony Pimentel 9/29/90 was arrested for burglary, conspiracy, street gang enhancement, and resisting arrest. Ernesto Moreno 1/23/87 was arrested for burglary, conspiracy, street gang enhancement, resisting arrest and parole violation.

Sac City Releases Balanced Budget Proposal

The City of Sacramento's today released its proposed budget for the 2009-10 fiscal year.

As proposed, the budget addresses a projected $50 million general fund shortfall with reductions in programs, services, and jobs. In spite of budget cuts necessary to balance next year's budget, city officials contend Sactown will continue to be a "full-service city."

The proposed budget will be brought to the City Council on May 19. Adoption of the final budget is expected June 16.

As proposed, the budget totals $875.1 million from all funding sources and supports 4,545 authorized full time positions. The general fund totals $385.9 million and 3,180 authorized full-time equivalent employees with 387 positions proposed to be unfunded. Of those 387 positions proposed to be cut, approximately 188 positions are still filled and at risk of
layoff. The proposed budget closes this budget gap with:

  • $28.9 million reduction in labor costs, including the unfunding of 387 full-time equivalent jobs
  • 6.0 million reduction in service and supplies expenses
  • $5.1 million in new revenues
  • $8.3 million in one-time funding
In March, the Sacramento Police Officer's Association voted to accept labor concessions. Since then, the City has been negotiating with other unions to reach labor concessions which could help reduce layoffs.

The process of cutting back and creating vacancies to help balance the budget began in October 2007. In an effort to educate and engage the community about the city's budget process and deficit, the city held budget workshops in January and February and attended five
neighborhood association meetings.
