For A Good Cause
Former Heron School student, Mireya Brambila Hernandez, and family were driving in Mexico, visiting family, when their car swerved to avoid something on the road and rolled over several times, killing the child.
The five others in the vehicle survived, but were seriously injured. The Natomas family had to wait three hours for emergency vehicles to arrive and some were airlifted to El Paso. Those that did not need to be airlifted waited seven hours for additional help.
Prior to the accident, Mireya's family had just gotten word that they had lost their home to foreclosure. The family has held car washes and raised some money, but whatever people can do to help out this truly humble and wonderful family I know would go a long way.
A fund has been set up for Mireya at Wells Fargo Bank, account #7734163459. She was a sweet, shy little girl who always had a smile on her face.

For A Good Cause: Seniors In Jeopardy
First, Elk Grove's transit system proposes fare hikes that would, in some cases, double the cost of transportation for seniors already on limited incomes.
Now, the county has plans to cut funding for senior programs at Stanford Settlement here in Natomas. The program, which already operates on a shoestring budget, offers transportation, meals and socialization for a small fee to seniors who would otherwise not be able to afford these services.
This news breaks our heart. Read the letter below from Sister Jeanne to find out how YOU can help!

You Asked, We Got The Answer
Traveling west on Del Paso Road right before Town Center I saw two street lights that had black boxes about 6"x6" attached about 12' high. They look like some type of camera and a red light flashes in the upper right-hand corner when traffic passes. Do you have any idea what those are?
"The black boxes in question are the City's radar detection devices. They are used to detect vehicles in the mid-rear range, and are used to evaluate whether or not a signal time should be extended or not. These boxes replace the loops that are cut into the street, and save on street maintenance wear and tear - increasing the streets longevity. They are very common in the north area."-Daniel Roth, District Director

Developing Story: Rental Scam Hits Natomas?
Written By NatomasBuzz.com on Tuesday, February 3, 2009 | 4:49 PM
A NATOMAS BUZZ reader wrote in to tell us two police cars and a News 10 satellite truck at 3700 Clubside Drive (in The Shores development, parallel to the Westlake clubhouse).
The concerned citizen called News 10 to see what was up, and apparently there was a rental scam at the house. According to the News 10 reporter that particular house had been vacant (foreclosed) for at least the last 2 years, but apparently a scam went down where someone claimed ownership of it and started “renting” it out to tenants for $1500 a month. Apparently the tenants just found out the “owners” really didn’t own it.
Click here for the News 10 story, here for the KCRA 3 story, and here for the Sac Bee coverage.
Thanks, J.B. for the tip!

In The News: Stolen Goods Traced To Natomas
Written By NatomasBuzz.com on Sunday, February 1, 2009 | 10:52 PM
Update from Sac PD Capt. Daniel Hahn: We received a call from the victim of a burglary in Citrus Heights. The victim saw their stolen property on Craig's List and met with the seller and bought it back. They called us. We determined where the suspect lived and also observed a subject holding an assault rifle in one of the pictures in the camera. When Officer Becerra drove up to the residence - a couple of subjects walked inside. No one would answer the door. Officers, K-9, etc. surrounded the house and began to call them out on the loud speaker. They came out (5 people). A couple were on parole and several had histories of theft. Numerous items of stolen property were found inside the residence and the gun was also found. The gun turned out to be an Air gun replica but looked very real. Five subjects were arrested for possession of stolen property. This investigation could involve numerous other thefts and is ongoing. 2/1/09 @ 2:34 pm, 2722 Macon Dr., Burglary/Stolen Property, Heritage Park
