In Case You Missed It: Summer School Canceled

The Natomas Unified School District sent the following message to families whose children were registered for K-8 summer school programs. Check out the Sac Bee on Friday for an article about how parents in Natomas, and elsewhere in the Sacramento area, are coping with the summer school cuts:

Good evening parents and guardians.

This is Heidi Van Zant, public information officer for the Natomas Unified School District.

I am calling this evening to let you know that summer school for our elementary and middle school students has been canceled due to the state budget crisis.

Our Board of Trustees made the difficult decision to cancel summer school at the elementary and middle school levels as part of an effort to address a projected $11 million budget gap for the Natomas schools.

Summer school for high school students is continuing as planned.

The Natomas Unified School District joins school districts across the state that have been forced by the dire state budget situation to cut valued programs such as summer school.

Please do what you can as a family to keep your child involved in learning this summer -- visit our city libraries, read daily with your children, watch less TV and do more outdoors.

We look forward to seeing you at the start of the new school year. And we look forward to the day when we can restore the programs now being lost to the state budget crisis.
