Breaking News: Suspect Arrested In North Natomas Murder

Earlier today Sac PD charged a 31-year-old man on suspicion of murdering a woman at the Homecoming Apartment complex earlier this month.

According to police Capt. Daniel Hahn, the suspect knew the victim and it was not a random attack.

"Many thanks need to go to some of the Leaders in the Creekside neighborhood and Homecoming Apartment management for their willingness and cooperation the day of this crime," says Hahn. "Another tremendous help on this case was some video footage from a private residence security camera system."
"This is what I talk about when I say working together is what makes a difference," he adds. "Thank you Creekside community for your help on this crime!"
The Homecoming Apartment complex is located on Kokomo Drive in the Creekside development.

Commuters Be Prepared

The North Natomas Transportation Management Association released the following tips for commuters who plan to use their The Flyer shuttle service during the Fix I-5 freeway closures:

  • Make sure you know which route you are riding - WEST, CENTRAL or EAST.
  • Have you checked our website for your NEW pick-up/drop-off times? - Check schedule here.
  • Each shuttle will have temporary directional signage - WEST, CENTRAL, EAST in the windows.
  • The Shuttle Hotline will be updated when a shuttle will be more than 10 minutes late. Hotline- 552-0313.
  • During construction time, your shuttle could be the usual TMA logo'd shuttle, a plain white shuttle that is similar in size, or a shuttle that has Paratransit's name on it. Look for the WEST, CENTRAL, EAST sign in the windows.
  • All shuttles are fitted with grab poles, overhead grab rails, and seatback grab bars that meet all state and federal requirements for standees on our vehicle types.
  • There may not be room for your bike on the shuttle bike rack, or your shuttle may not have a bike rack. We are disappointed about this as well.
  • If you don't have a shuttle ticket, please carry correct change - $1 each ride.
  • A Spare The Air advisory will be issued when the forecast is for 150 AQI or higher. A notice will be posted inside each shuttle and you will NOT have to pay that day - either morning or evening. Our information comes from the Sacramento Air Quality Management District and we will abide by their call.
  • Your shuttle driver may get downtown and back any number of ways. Please respect the drivers and their decisions.
If you have been living under a rock, and know nothing about the Fix I-5 construction project, or the North Natomas' expanded shuttle service, click here.

A Word From Our Candidates

NATOMAS BUZZ readers may recall a post earlier this month about a planned interview with Mayor Heather Fargo -- at the request of Fargo's reps.

Unfortunately, our interview with Fargo scheduled for May 19 was canceled the afternoon before and efforts to schedule a telephone interview did not come to fruition.

So THE BUZZ offered to send Fargo's camp a questionnaire and after last week's candidate forum, we decided to give candidates Kevin Johnson and Leonard Padilla a chance to answer the same questions.

All three candidates were provided the same questions and given a deadline of noon Tuesday, May 27. Padilla's responses were returned three hours early. Johnson's came in two hours later -- still 45 minute before the noon deadline.

More than four hours after the deadline, THE BUZZ received the following message from Fargo's campaign rep Dale Howard, "We have every intent of getting your answers done, but we'll need more time. Sorry for the delay."

24 hours later we have yet to receive anything from Fargo and so, to be fair to the candidates who met the deadline, we shall press forward.

As requested by THE BUZZ, many of our readers e-mailed questions they wanted posed to Mayor Fargo.

Creekside HOA prez Angelique Ashby wrote, "It seems to me that the over-arching issue in Natomas is a fundamental gap in service expectation between the community and the city -- meaning that the community members have expectations to receive and or have access to resources that the City either is not, does not or will not provide at the level the community wants..."

With that in mind, THE BUZZ asked candidates to address how they view the Natomas neighborhood, whether they felt there were any specific issues facing our community, what those issues are, and what their solutions -- as Mayor -- would be.

THE BUZZ is pleased to present the candidates' responses to these questions and look forward to hearing what our readers think.

Berry, Berry Delicious!

It's that time of year again!

Our favorite fresh berry stand located on El Centro Road, between W. El Camino Avenue and San Juan Road, is up and running and selling berries, berries, berries!

Take a detour and pick up a pint -- or two -- the ripe, red strawberries are not only picked daily, but they cheaper and tastier than what you can find in the grocery store.

The stand also sells cherries, onions and more.

Collision Ties Up Traffic

This SUV and Safeway.Com delivery truck had a bit of a disagreement around 1:30 p.m. this afternoon at the intersection of Natomas Boulevard and North Park Drive.

This is not the first collision at the busy crossroads in the Natomas Park development, but definitely a dramatic one from the looks of the damage to both vehicles -- and the SUV's final resting place.

It appears neither driver was injured.

What Happens Now?

A community meeting has been scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Jefferson Park to discuss the Fort Natomas fire and how area residents want to proceed.

Councilman Ray Tretheway and Mayor Heather Fargo are offering a $5,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of the people responsible for the fire.

The Fires Of Hell Are Waiting...

...for the evil people who keep burning down Sacramento-area playgrounds.

For the second time in two years, the community-built Fort Natomas has been burned to the ground.

The playground is located at Jefferson Park in South Natomas. The fire started around 1 a.m. and completely destroyed all the play structures, according to online news reports.

The park was built in 1991 and burned down in June of 2006. The community rebuilt it again shortly there after.

According to News10.Net, many community members including Councilman Ray Tretheway were on scene of this latest fire.

Playgrounds are not just toys for our children to play on, but they represent community spirit and Fort Natomas is no exception.

Shame on the arsonists for trying to put good people down.

Get your tissues. Here is a video about rebuilding Fort Natomas - the first time.

What's The Haps In Natomas?

At the urging of a trusted reader, THE BUZZ has decided to add a calendar to our online offerings...

Simply look for WHAT'S THE HAPS? in the right-hand column and click on the link.

In the last week we have also added CATCH THE BUZZ which allows readers to subscribe to a RSS feed of our posts.

BUZZ readers be sure to send us your events so we can get them on the calendar!

Isn't It Ironic?

THE BUZZ posted our previous post in the wee hours of morning...

Should have waited a few more hours for this morning's edition of the
Sac Bee.

As pointed out in reader comments already, the
Bee has decided to endorse no one candidate at this time.

In an editorial published today, the local daily pub suggests voters cast ballots for any candidate other than current Mayor Fargo or KJ.

The idea is that neither lead candidate would receive a simple majority of the votes to win the election and thus a second vote in November would be required.

We find the
Sac Bee's reader comments both hilarious and on spot in response to this issue -- what do BUZZ readers think?

Is It Just Me?

Is it just me or is it unclear who the Sac Bee favors in the upcoming mayoral election?

First there is a huge story about Councilman Robbie Waters switching his endorsement from Fargo to KJ on the front page of the Metro section.

Then there is a story on Page B2 about Sacramento County Supe Roger Dickinson's endorsement of Fargo.

The articles seem a little editorialized, too. What say you BUZZ readers?

As Smooth As A Baby's...

The newly paved intersection at Del Paso Road and Natomas Boulevard is looking good, but THE BUZZ is starting to wonder... When will this project be
done, y'all?

Update from Councilman Ray Tretheway's office: The city plans to have Del Paso Road 99% complete by June 15. The remaining items are signing, striping, and landscaping.

It's Hard To Be Hip

THE BUZZ just learned that one of our fave Natomas-owned and operated businesses -- Sunshine's Hip Baby children's clothing boutique -- closed its shop next door to Jack's Urban Eats last weekend.

But Sunshine herself says loyal shoppers should not fret. Hip Baby still operates as an online store and, better yet, offers free shipping to its customers!

Field Of Unfulfilled Dreams

The site of the mothballed Natomas Meadows development looks just that -- like a meadow in Natomas. Wonder how they plan to keep the weeds down?

Meanwhile, just beyond the abandoned model homes, work on the low-income Willow Glen apartments complex moves forward despite the gusty winds.

What Did YOU Think Of Tonight's Mayoral Forum?

Anonymous wrote in to THE BUZZ:

"I was very disappointed that the organizers decided to change the format on the day of the event. The event went OKonce thing settled down, after Johnson appeared, but even still people came to hear Johnson only, not the other candidates. What was advertised is what should have been presented."

THE BUZZ reader Charles Laver writes:

"The meeting tonight was revealing on many levels, of particular note was Chris Paros' question on full inclusion housing to Fargo, of which she replied that no other council member wanted low income housing in their district, so North Natomas was the best spot for it and no votes could overturn it. Mr. Tretheway sat quietly by, (even more pathetic.) The whole city needs to share the burden of such housing."

"Equally disturbing was Fargo's contention of annexing the north area because the county will somehow improperly invade, why is there not a joint cooperation and better regional long term planning and can the city afford the proper level of services for such expansion? There were some good questions, but like all keen politicians, she blamed the city's woes on state or federal revenue shortfalls or hurricane Katrina, anything other than her own shortcomings."

Out Of The Fire & Into The Pan(handle)

Readers: This post has been updated with corrected information.

After months of being tabled (five times, to be exact) the public hearing on the controversial Panhandle Project was finally closed at the Sac City Council meeting held April 29.

According to the meeting summary, there was no public comment at the meeting. Councilmember Sheedy moved to close the public hearing and Councilmember Waters seconded the motion. Councilmembers Cohn, Hammond and Fong were reported absent.

The motion carried and the Panhandle Project will be revisited at a meeting in the future.

Natomas Makes The News In La La Land

In case you missed it, the Natomas Basin made it into the Los Angeles Times last week in a story about Sacramento officials' flood prep.

My fave part of this article? It appears the reporter failed to interview anyone who lives or owns businesses in the neighborhood and yet they were able to write:

"When heavy rain begins to fall, folks here peer nervously at the sky and riverbanks."

Okaaaaaaaaaaay.

Who did the La La Times interview? Let's see:

County Supervisor Roger Dickinson, "Every winter we hold our breaths and hope this isn't the year something happens before we can finish the work. There is a sense of the clock ticking."

And Sacramento Area Flood Control Agency exec Stein Buer who is quoted as saying, "I never sleep during storms."

Mayor Heather Fargo adds, "To me, floods are the biggest risk to public safety we face and the biggest risk to our economic viability. In our 12-step recovery, we are way beyond denial."

And, finally, Jeffrey Mount, director of UC Davis' Center for Watershed Sciences, said of city leaders chimes in, "They placed
